The centre was successful recently with its application to Public Health Nova Scotia for funding the Our Food Project. Over the next four years, much of the work the Ecology Action Centre has already offered – including the implementation and support of community gardens here in Cumberland County, food workshops and presentation – will continue and expand.
“It’s pretty exciting,” Su Morin, who has been named the local food connection project coordinator said. “There are a lot of goals for the next four years, but for my job there are two components: working with communities to build capacity like community gardens… another component is infrastructure; anything from resources to start a garden or raised bed, helping write grants.”
Capacity, Morin said, includes training and leadership development for the Cumberland County area, so community members can take charge supporting their communities towards improved food-sustainability. Through instruction and networking, especially with farmers markets, Morin hopes to see more partnerships developing.
To date, the Ecology Action Centre has worked with partners in the Amherst, Parrsboro, Pugwash, Springhill, River Hebert areas offering almost 30 day-courses on topics ranging from canning to composting and mushroom cultivation; ten infrastructure projects and introduced eight community gardens in the region, including the community garden in Springhill. With the help of Public Health Nova Scotia, that work will continue and grow.
On the horizon, the Ecology Action Centre is offering its fourth annual wild edible walk at the Amherst Bird Sanctuary on Saturday, Sept. 13.
