Great year for blueberry pies

She’s not willing to go so far as to say her blueberry pie is the best in the world, but Parrsboro’s Giselle Henwood will say her blueberry pie is ‘probably’ the best in the world. Henwood, along with her aunt, Carol Coleman, were selling slices of pie over the weekend at the Gem and Mineral Show in Parrsboro.

PARRSBORO – Blueberry harvest season is upon us and Parrsboro’s Giselle Henwood says this year’s crop is great for making blueberry pies.

“This year the blueberries are a little bigger, which tends to make them a little sweeter,” said Henwood. “It’s a really good season this year. Better than it’s been the last couple of seasons.”

Her uncle, Christie Henwood, owns a blueberry farm in Halfway River and has been harvesting blueberries for 30-years.

“That’s where we get the blueberries from,” said Henwood.

Henwood and her mom Kathy make the pies.

“My mom’s been making pies for 40 years. We used to have a restaurant,” said Henwood.

Henwood uses three cups of blueberries in each of her pies and also uses lard in the crust.

“I think lard gives a better mouth-feel to the crust,” said Henwood. “It’s soft and flaky, but not as flaky as when you use shortening.”

An individual pie takes about 20 minutes to assemble, and then spends one hour cooking in the oven.

Henwood, along with her aunt, Carol Coleman, were selling the pies over the weekend at the Gem and Mineral Show in Parrsboro.

Henwood can usually be found Friday afternoon at the Amherst

Farmers Market at the Lions Den.

She doesn’t currently sell her pies there but say, “If someone wants to ask for one they can contact me at the Farmers Market on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” said Henwood.
