River Hebert renovations to be completed by May 2015

Construction projects at two Cumberland County schools are progessing well, says an official with the Education Department.

AMHERST – Construction on a pair of Cumberland County schools is progressing as planned.

Michelle Lucas from the Department of Education said the new West Highlands Elementary School on Maltby Court will be ready for students in January, while renovations at River Hebert District High School will be completed by May 2015.

“Both projects are progressing well,” Lucas said in an email. “Construction is ongoing at both schools and there haven’t been any issues.”

West Highlands will replace the century-old elementary school on Hickman Street. It was originally scheduled to be ready for the opening of classes in two weeks, but was pushed back to November because of some minor delays in the start of the project.

Lucas said the project is still on schedule, but the decision has been made not to move students to the school in the middle of the term. As a result, when the students come back to class after Christmas they’ll go to the new school.

“It makes more sense to open the school in January. To do so in November would be very disruptive,” she said.

The province did the same thing with both Spring Street Academy and Cumberland North Academy when they opened approximately a decade ago replacing aging three elementary schools.

As for River Hebert, Lucas said the project is progressing very well.

The province awarded the tender for the school to Dora Construction last December after the renovation project was delayed for 18 months because the original tender came in much higher than budgeted.

The $6.15-million project will convert the school to a Primary to 12 facility.

The renovations include updating the building and a two-storey addition. The project includes improved areas such as library, cafeteria, music room, science labs, a youth health centre and new elementary classrooms.

Wait until the school is finished before making judgment. A well functioning building does not necessarily have to be great to look at. Too many windows makes it hard to heat and cool as well as trying to see paper or computers. Also the fancy buildings cost more to maintain.

Don't forget the new gym at the River Hebert school. The old one was condemned and tore down last week. There has been a lot of things happen in River Hebert and Joggins in the past few months since we lost our reporter. Has this paper given any thought to getting new reporter for the area. 2 forest fires one house fire and someone lit the dump afire . Just to list a few things going on!!

Perhaps River Hebert needs an arson investigator before a reporter?

Theo I think most of the people in the River Hebert - Joggins area have a good idea who is behind the fires! However it is a hard thing to prove!
