Man convicted in chained teen case dies in Springhill prison

SPRINGHILL – John Leonard MacKean, one of the men responsible for sexually assaulting a teenage boy confined in a remote cabin in Nova Scotia, died in prison Wednesday.

Death at prison

At the time of his death, MacKean, 65 years old, had been serving a sentence of two years, for Sexual Assault and Prostitution of a person under 18. His sentence had commenced on June 24, 2014.

 

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

 

In September 2012, a boy, who was 16 at the time, emerged half-naked from the woods and said he had been chained in a cabin and assaulted by three men.

MacKean was later arrested in November of 2012.

David James LeBlanc, also accused, was sent to prison last June after pleading guilty to kidnapping, forcible confinement, sexual assault, uttering threats and breach of conditions.

The third man accused, Wayne Alan Cunningham, was found dead near the scene of where Leblanc was arrested in Ontario.
