AMHERST – Amherst police responded to 120 complaints over the course of the week, beginning July 28th, and ending August 3. 

Police News

Monday

A break and enter was reported at a business on Eddy Street. A 22 year old female and a fifteen year old male were apprehended by security at the scene. The matter remains under investigation. 

Police attended a hit and run at Needs Convenience store on Church Street.  A vehicle had driven into the front windows of the store and then left the scene. Police have received multiple tips regarding the identity of the driver and are continuing their investigation. 

No arrests have been made at this time.

 

Tuesday

Amherst Police attended a motor vehicle collision on East Victoria Street. A Ford F150 was side swiped by a Red Saturn SL2. No charges are expected to be laid in the incident.

A bicycle business on Church Street was egged in the early morning hours. Police are investigating.

 

Wednesday

A female reported a theft of $200 from her apartment on Dickey Street.  Investigation into the matter has been concluded and no charges are expected to be laid in the matter.

Police received a call of several dogs left in a vehicle parked in the parking lot of Giant Tiger. The vehicle had left the scene prior to police attendance, however, police are following up with the owners of the vehicle.

 

Thursday

A 49 year-old male was arrested for public intoxication after he was found passed out near a business on Victoria Street. The male was lodged in cells until he was sober and issued a summary offence ticket upon his release.

A shed was broken into at a residence on Liberty Lane. Nothing was taken but a screen had been damaged and the shed’s window was pried open to gain entry. No arrests have been made at this time.

 

Friday

Officers received a call about an intoxicated male walking on Russell Street.  The male was spoken to by police and he was arrested for breach of the peace due to an extremely agitated state. The 62 year old male was lodged in cells and released without charges once he was sober.

A break and enter was reported at a residence on Laplanche Street. Oil damage was reported in the basement after the suspects attempted to steal copper pipes from the residence. Police are investigating the incident.

Police attended to a hit and run reported in the Giant Tiger parking lot. A van was reported to have backed into a parked vehicle and then left the scene. The van was stopped by officers on Church Street and the 39 year old driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to immediately stop at the scene of an accident.

A 20 year-old male has been charged with resist arrest, uttering threats against a person and an animal, possession of a narcotic and mischief under $5000 after police received a call about stolen medications. The male suspect was located by police on Crescent Avenue and he resisted police efforts to arrest him. The male will appear at Amherst Provincial Court on September 15th for plea.

 

Saturday

A 43 year-old male was arrested on Maple Avenue after police observed him breaching his undertaking conditions.  The male was outside his residence while on house arrest and was under the influence of alcohol, both contrary to his release conditions. The male was remanded into custody and will appear in Amherst Provincial Court on August 5th for plea.

Police issued a seven-day driver suspension to a 22 year old female after stopping her vehicle on South Albion Street. The driver had blown a “warning” on a roadside screening device after police detected alcohol on the driver’s breath.

A 14 year-old youth was arrested for possession of marijuana after police observed him using drugs at the Lions Skateboard Park. The youth will likely be diverted to a Restorative Justice program and will be issued a trespass notice to stay off the property.

 

Sunday

A 40 year-old male has been charged with assault after witnesses reported that he had kicked a 41 year old female several times near a downtown area bar. The female was transported to the hospital by Emergency Health Services with injuries to her back. The male will appear at Amherst Provincial Court on August 11th for plea.

Police attended an assault complaint at a Crescent Avenue residence. A 26 year-old male had assaulted a 40 year old male by pushing him during an argument. The male was arrested however the matter was resolved without charges.
