Y-NOT sets fastest time in New Glasgow

Team returns to Harbourfest Saturday

Despite very little experience, The Y-Not dragon boat team has become a force to be reckoned with. They recently won the Sports Division and the Grand Final trophy’s in New Glasgow, and this weekend they will compete at Harbourfest in Pugwash. Receiving their trophy in New Glasgow is: (front, from left): Courtenay Black, team captain Sean Callaghan, drummer Jennifer Rose, (middle, from left) Brenda Clarke, Robyn Barrow, Laura Coleman, Crystal Farrell, Sherry Bickerton, Kim Wood, Nicola Sperry, Leanne Carter, Melissa Gould, (back, from left) Brad Skinner, Steven MacDonald, Patrick Farrell, Shawn Pickering, David Sutherland, Wes Herrett, Bob Sperry, Barry Melanson and David Hirtle. Missing is Alexa Jane Coleman, Jamie Parks and Robert Davis.

AMHERST – With little experience and unusual practice techniques the Y-NOT dragon boat team is proving tough to beat.

“Our practices consist of either sitting on two rows of chairs or paddling while on the edge of the YMCA pool deck, which in no way relates to actually being in the boat,” said Sean Callaghan, Y-NOT team captain.

Their unconventional training techniques have not hampered their showing in competitions.

Their most recent competition was two weeks ago at the Race on the River Dragon Boat Regatta in New Glasgow.

There were 31 Teams entered in the regatta, which was comprised of 24 Races.

Despite seven of their paddlers never having been in a dragon boat prior to the Race on the River, and three others for which it was their first experience, Y-NOT went undefeated for the day and set the day’s fastest race time.

They won the Sports Division final trophy, as well as the Grand Final trophy.

The team originally formed on a whim in 2013 to compete at Harbourfest in Pugwash.

With absolutely no experience they came in second place to Dartmouth’s Dragon Beasts, which train out of Lake Banook.

Y-NOT will return to Pugwash Saturday, where they will be among those contesting the Pugwash Harbourfest Regatta.
