Annual dragon boat races draw lots of community support

NEW GLASGOW – Meghan Brophy, marketing director for the Race on the River, was still floating on cloud nine following the closing ceremony on Saturday afternoon.

This year’s pledges reached $125,000, exceeding the organizers’ expectations, Brophy said, with funds going towards the Women Alike Breast Cancer Survivors Society, Special Olympics Northern Region, and the Pictou County Prostate Cancer Support Association.

“The whole day is really a high because as a community, we all work so hard to achieve the common goal of the fundraising,” she said.

Pledges and the amount of teams were down from previous years, but Brophy said everyone involved was thrilled with how the event went.

She said they had several teams from away this year, a few of which had never been in the race.

“We always have the same community teams every year, which is great to see, but having teams from away always boosts the community morale.”

No matter what happens from year to year, one thing remains the same, Brophy, a board member for four years, said.

“It’s the continued support. No matter what the community faces, we can still expect such a great turnout from the community through our sponsors, through the day of, through our pledges, everything. I feel like each year it’s just better.”
