PARRSBORO – The Pictou County Brass and Reed Band returned to perform for a second year in a row during the outdoor music festival in Parrsboro.

"It’s fun performing and meeting other people in the same business,” said Bob Pushie, Pictou County Brass and Reed Band conductor.

The band has been together since 1978. They started with 40 members but those numbers dwindled to eight members.

“We experienced a rebirth three years ago and now we have 25 members,” said Pushie.

The rebirth was made possible because of a beginner program, which encourages beginner musicians to play with the band.

“We play old popular music like Cabaret, Moon River, and I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” said Pushie. “It’s a re-imagining of old favourites.

Pushie has been with the band since 1978, and has led the band for 10 years.

Why has he stuck with it for so long?

“I’m stubborn,” he said with a laugh. “And I love it.”
