Latest design captures vibrancy of downtown Sackville

SACKVILLE, N.B. – A new colorful image will soon greet visitors into Sackville.

The town is getting set to install new billboard signs along the highway, replacing the existing signage that has been in place for more than five years, which features a black and white image of the Tantramar marsh by local photographer Thaddeus Holownia.

Jamie Burke, senior manager of corporate projects, said the previous signs have worked well since their installation but it’s simply time for a “fresh new look.”

Burke said the town is still working the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure on the final touches for the text on the new signs but the image has already been selected. In consultation with Sackville’s tourism advisory committee, town staff and council approved a painting by Sackville native Mary Scobie for the new image, which showcases the downtown during a festival or market event.

“We really wanted to capture the festive atmosphere of downtown Sackville,” said Burke, “to show the vibrancy of our downtown.”

Mary Scobie grew up in Sackville and received a bachelor of music degree from Mount Allison University and a diploma in graphic design from the Nova Scotia College of Art

and Design in Halifax. She moved to the west coast in 1992 and currently lives outside of Victoria, BC where she paints and works as a graphic designer and  illustrator.

The new signs, which will be designed and installed by Hansen Signs of Moncton at a cost of $4,891, will also feature the tagline – Sackville, home of Mount Allison University. Hansen was the lowest of two successful bidders.

Burke said transitioning the image will “really help market the town from a tourism point of view.”
