The Cumberland YMCA is hosting the Basic Spirit Dragonboat Challenge at Pugwash HarbourFest on Saturday, Aug. 9. Teams and individuals can register for the event by contacting Laura Coleman at the YMCA at 667-9112.
AMHERST – The dragons are coming back to Pugwash.
The popular dragonboats are returning to HarbourFest in Pugwash with the Cumberland YMCA organizing the event as a fundraiser.
“Last year we had a team in the event and had so much fun. This year we were asked if we’d be interested in organizing the event and using as a fundraiser for the Y,” Laura Coleman said Wednesday.
The Basic Spirit Dragonboat Challenge takes place on Saturday, Aug. 9 beginning at Dinghy Beach in Pugwash Harbour. Each team will get a practice run and two races with the top teams qualifying for the final.
“We’re accepting registration for both teams and individuals. It’s a great setting to bring your group or organization together in a friendly competition and we’ll be able to place individuals on teams as well,” Coleman said.
Each team is made up of 20 paddlers, plus a drummer, while the company supplying the boats will supply someone to steer the boat.
Participants must be at least 10-year-old (and have a waiver signed by a parent if they’re under 18). Paddles and lifejackets are provided.
Coleman said the races last for about a minute and involve a lot of furious paddling.
“You can’t look at it as hard work, it really is a lot of fun and I know when we did it last year we felt so energized afterward,” she said.
Registration is $500 for a team or $25 for individuals.
While the registration deadline is Friday, Coleman some late registrations will still be accepted.
