Amherst's first female mayor, Joyce Gouchie, died early Friday at the age of 80. She worked 30 years with MT&T and spent 14 years on town council before becoming mayor in 1994.
Amherst’s first female mayor, Joyce Gouchie, passed away early Fridy at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Gouchie, who spent 14 years on town council, served as mayor between 1994 and 1997.
AMHERST – Amherst’s first female mayor has died.
Joyce Gouchie died early Friday at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. She was 80 years old.
Gouchie was a town councillor for 14 years and ran for mayor upon the retirement of Walter Purdy in 1994 and defeated businessman Bob Janes and the late Francis Soontiens to become Amherst’s first woman mayor.
Gouchie, who worked for 30 years with MT&T, disappeared from public life to spend time with her famiy after she was defeated in the 1997 election by Jerry Hallee, who would go on to serve three terms.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home. There will be no public visitation or funeral, but donations in her memory can be made to a charity of choice.
