HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia government is paying tribute to Maxine Cochran, the province’s first female cabinet minister.
Cochran died Tuesday.
She was 87 years old.
Premier Stephen McNeil offered his condolences to the woman’s family and friends, saying Cochran paved the way for the many women now serving in elected roles.
Cochran was elected to the Nova Scotia legislature in 1984 as the Progressive Conservative member for Lunenburg Centre.
In 1985, she was appointed transport minister under then premier John Buchanan.
