July 17 event at Amherst Stadium will see bike and helmet given away

Amherst Police are hosting a bike/scooter rodeo on July 17 in conjunction with the town and its youth town council.

The Amherst Stadium is hosting a bike/scooter rodeo on July 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is being put on by the Amherst Police, Community and Economic Development and the Amherst Youth Town Council. Among those getting ready for the event are: (from left) Peter Woo from Community and Economic Development, Constables Tom Wood and Michelle Harrison from the Amherst Police Department, Corey Crocker from Community and Economic Development and children Connor MacDonald, Ethan MacDonald and Daniel Gould.

AMHERST – Amherst Police and Community and Economic Development are teaming up with the Amherst Youth Town Council to host an Extreme Bike/Scooter Rodeo on Thursday, July 17.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Amherst Stadium and is open to all children ages five and up.

“There are a lot of events planned for the day and it will operate in a different format than a traditional bike rodeo,” Const. Tom Wood of the Amherst Police Department said. “There will be an obstacle course as well as various safety stations.”

Wood said the event will not just be for bicycles, but also for children with scooters.

The bike rodeo will help make up for the rodeo at Spring Street Academy that was cancelled by inclement weather just before the end of the school year. This event is open to all children.

“There will be a free barbecue for participants from noon until 1 p.m. and will have someone there from the Bicycle Specialist doing adjustments. We will also be having a draw for a bike and a helmet,” Const. Michelle Harrison said.

The Amherst Fire Department’s Pumper Joe fire truck will also make an appearance.

The police department will also be using the event to help promote the Heads Up Helmets On program that encourages children to wear helmets when bicycling, using a scooter or inline skates.

For more information about the event contact Corey Crocker at 667-6503 or ccrocker@amherst.ca .
