Transition program to be available countywide

AMHERST – Going to school this fall will be easier for Grade Primary students and their parents thanks to a program being offered by Maggie’s Place and the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board.

Five-year-old Jaden Kierstead is looking forward to starting school in September, but first he will attend the Transition to School Summer Program being offered by Maggie’s Place and the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board this summer.

The Transition to School Summer Program will be offered at schools across Cumberland County on select dates this summer.

“It’s a school readiness program for children entering Grade Primary,” explained Maggie’s Place employee Heather Matthews. “We work on some fine motor skills, and the transition from being at home or preschool into Grade Primary.”

Routines such as changing shoes, hanging up backpacks, opening things up without help at lunchtime are just a few of the things worked on with the children.

The program is free of charge, and has been offered for several years now in Cumberland County.

Feedback has been positive, according to Matthews, who said it has proven to be helpful to not only the youngsters and their teachers, but for their parents, who are also going through a transition.

“For a lot of parents, there is high anxiety about letting their little ones go,” she said. “It’s a great time for them to be able to feel comfortable, and come and hang out for a few minutes in the morning with them. It just makes that whole transition a little smoother.”

The programs will be offered in the schools the students will be attending, and most will even be offered in what will be their Grade Primary classroom.

“It gets them familiar with all of the changes, and familiar with the environment,” said Matthews. “It’s also a time when there are no other kids in the school, so it’s not so intimidating for the little ones.”

The Transition to School program will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following places and dates: July 7-11 – West Highlands Elementary; July 7-10 – Wentworth Consolidated Elementary; July 14-18 – Cumberland North Academy; July 21-25 – Junction Road Elementary; July 21-25 – West End Memorial; July 28-31 – Advocate District School; July 28-31 – Wallace Consolidated Elementary; Aug. 5-8 – Spring Street Academy; Aug. 11-14 – Northport Consolidated Elementary; Aug. 11-15 – Parrsboro Regional Elementary; Aug. 18-22 – Oxford Regional Education Centre; Aug. 19-22 – River Hebert District Elementary; and Aug. 25-29 – Cyrus Eaton Elementary.
