AMHERST – Amherst Police are alerting residents of a fraud circulating through the area.  The fraud is known as the phoney bank inspector fraud.

The fraudster, either alone or with accomplices, will claim to be a bank inspector or police officer.  He or she will then claim that they are trying to trap a dishonest employee of a bank in which the victim has an account.

The first contact made by the fraudster to the victim is usually by telephone however they have been known to send these scams through email as well.

The scammer will ask the victim to withdraw money from their account and give it to the con artist to use. The con artist takes the money and then states that the money will be kept as evidence against the employee(s) under scrutiny.

These criminals will usually emphasize to the victim the need to maintain silence on the operation and to not speak about the matter to anyone.  The scammers want to prevent the victim from being tipped off by friends or family members.

The phoney bank inspector will then disappear with the money once they receive it.

In our area, a female received a call from unknown individuals claiming to be from a local bank’s security department. They requested the female withdraw $5,000 and then await further instructions.

Police were able to intervene before the money was passed off to the criminals.

The police would like to remind everyone that no bank employees, security officials or police officers will ask residents to withdraw large amounts of money from their bank accounts.

If residents do get calls that are similar, they are advised to contact the Amherst Police Department at 902-667-8600.
