SPRINGHILL – Saturday is the first day of summer, and the community of Springhill is ready to kick into the season.

Saturday is the first day of summer and Springhill is ready to celebrate with a day of events and food at the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre. To get ready for summer, Springhill recently held a community cleanup where groups, organization and volunteers like (from left) Alexa, Brooke and Corey Galloway were outfitted with T-shirts from Tim Hortons and treated to barbecue for their hard work to make the town look its best for summer.

Springhill Leisure Services has a day of fun, food and laser tag scheduled for the Lions Park, come rain or shine.

A three-on-three basketball tournament is scheduled, weather pending. The double-elimination tournament costs $4 per person and offers a free barbecue afterwards.

Meanwhile, between none and 4 p.m., the centre will host a laser tag event inside the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre. Cost is $5 per game or $25 for the day, and matches will feature up to 20 players at a time.

Coinciding with the summer kickoff at the centre, the Springhill Community Garden will have a planting day, complete with barbecue, face painting and instruction. That runs between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., with the barbecue scheduled for noon.
