SPRINGHILL – The academic community of Springhill was looking for change, and they got it.

Habitat For Humanity in Springhill received another healthy contribution towards the build for the Embree-Brundage family this month, when Springhill’s family of elementary schools presented the proceeds from its Change For Change fundraiser to the committee. School representatives and members of the family presented Habitat For Humanity Springhill with $346 towards its fundraising goal.

What started as a friendly challenge between Springhill High and the Nova Scotia Community College’s Cumberland Campus to raise money for the Habitat For Humanity project in Springhill, grew into a three-tiered fundraiser when Springhill’s elementary schools – West End Memorial and Junction Road Elementary – got involved, adding another $346 towards the local build.

“Our committee would like to send out a huge thank-you to the schools,” Habitat for Humanity Springhill’s Cheryl Veinotte-Mackey said. “Now the next phase of the Change for Change Fundraiser is for local businesses to offer to put the houses out on their counters for customers to donate. The houses have been painted in bright colors by the elementary school children.”

Any business that is willing to display a house for 2-3 weeks should contact Cheryl Veinotte-Mackey at 902-597-4502 or email cheryl.veinotte@nscc.ca.

With the family selection process now competed, the local Habitat For Humanity team is now looking for a community member with a strong background in corporate fundraising, Veinotte-Mackey said.

“We are going to be focusing very diligently on seeking large-level donations between June and Aug,” she said.

The committee is awaiting final specifications on the build, but for now are working with a $35,000 fundraising estimate. That will be matched by Habitat For Humanity Nova Scotia and in-kind donations.
