SACKVILLE, N.B. – Sackville Rickshaw Tours will take to the streets once again this summer.

Operated by Michael Vickruck, the rickshaw service will once again be offered from the end of June until the end of summer, starting out on downtown Main Street and taking visitors on a number of different routes to see the sights in the community.

Town council recently approved Vickruck’s request to run the rickshaw from a parking space in front of 98 Main Street, which will serve as his drop-off and pick-up location.

This year, however, Vickruck will take advantage of the higher demand on weekends and run the rickshaw from Thursday to Sunday, and opt out of Monday to Wednesday service.

Although there was also a request for Sackville Rickshaw Tours to use the main path in the Waterfowl Park – from Main Street over to the Doncaster Bridge – as part of his trips, council denied that request.

That’s because giving approval would be contrary to a town bylaw, which prohibits any kind of vehicular traffic in the park and only allows bicycles on designated trails.

Jamie Burke, the town’s senior manager of corporate projects, said this bylaw would need to be reviewed in order to open it up to other uses.

“If we really want to open up the trail to that type of use, the bylaw should be reconsidered . . . and that’s probably a bigger discussion we need to have,” he said.
