Suspect surrendered without incident early Friday morning

Police have identified three officers killed by a lone gunman on Wednesday night in Moncton.

MONCTON – RCMP in Moncton have released the names of the three officers killed by a lone gunman on Wednesday night.

Constables David Ross, 32; Frabrice Georges Gevaudan, 45; and Douglas James Larch, 40, were fatally wounded when 24-year-old Justin Bourque went on a shooting rampage in north-end Moncton on Wednesday evening.

Bourque was taken into custody just after midnight Thursday night in a wooded area near the intersection of Wheeler Boulevard and Mountain Road.

Police say the suspect surrendered without incident and remains in custody. He is expected to make a court appearance in Moncton later today.

While police recovered weapons close by, Bourque had none on him at the time.

Assistant commissioner Roger Brown, commanding officer of J Division in New Brunswick, told a Friday morning press conference that the RCMP is in mourning.

“This is a trying time for our members as we have lost three of our own and two more are hospitalized,” Brown said. “I commend our members for their dedication and professionalism as they were able to stay focused on the task at hand and getting results throughout this ordeal bringing the situation to a quick end.”

Brown said the RCMP is also grateful for the support given to police by members of the public and the media.
