Amherst’s newest retailer will open its doors early Saturday. Giant Tiger is opening in the Amherst Centre in the former Zellers location. The doors open at 8 p.m. with a number of celebrations taking place.
AMHERST – Giant Tiger is set to open its doors in Amherst early Saturday.
Several months after announcing it was setting up a 17,000-square-foot store in the former Zellers location at Amherst Centre, the company will officially open its door at 8 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“Everyone is really excited about opening day. We have been doing a lot of work to make sure the store is merchandised with plenty of product and that our fashions are well situated for the customers,” store manager Daniel Nickerson said during a sneak peak of the store on Thursday.
“Our stores are like a treasure hunt. Sometimes we get some pretty big buys with some of our merchandise that customers wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else. They will also like the bargains we have in other areas of the store, like in grocery and produce.”
Nickerson said the opening will include a barbecue for the West Highlands Elementary School while there will be plenty of free activities throughout the day for customers of all ages including gift card giveaways, free face painting, pictures from the fun Giant Tiger photo booth, the Terry the Tiger bouncy castle, snowcones and visits from Friendly the Giant Tiger.
Giant Tiger announced its plans to open a store in Amherst last November. It replaces Zellers, which closed its doors in June 2012 after the store’s Canadian assets were sold to the U.S.-based Target.
Giant Tiger offers a large assortment of casual clothing and footwear, offering the identical quality and fashion items offered by major chain stores at the lowest possible price.
The store also provides grocery, confectionary items, pet food, cleaning supplies, housewares, stationary, toys and health and beauty products.
“Giant Tiger is a fun, smart place to shop. We provide great value through great pricing and great quality with our fashions. We also allow our customers to stretch their dollars for better value,” Nickerson said.
He expects the store will employ approximately 30 people.
