11-year-old Jacob Melanson will be selling loom bracelets, which are made from elastic bands, at the Relay for Life June 7, at Robb's Centennial Complex in Amherst. Encouraging Melanson in his endeavour is Sheila Christie, Amherst Relay for Life chairwoman, and Doug Costin, Amherst Tim Horton's franchise owner. Tim Horton's/Wendy's is sponsoring kids activities at the event.
AMHERST - Cancer comes in many forms and, to reflect that reality, the theme of this year's Amherst Relay for Life is ‘Colors of Cancer.'
The 11th annual Relay for Life in Amherst/Cumberland County is June 7, at Robb's Centennial Complex in Amherst. The 12-hour event begins at 1 p.m.
"Teams are encouraged to tailor their costumes and tent sites around the Colors of Cancer theme," said Sheila Christie, Amherst Relay for Life chairwoman.
One way to accessorize costumes with colour is to purchase loom bracelets from Jacob Melanson.
The 11-year-old has been making and selling his elastic band bracelets for over six months and has raised more than $800, which he has donated to the Relay for Life.
"Jacob has joined the organizing committee and he will be on site to sell his bracelets in the gift shop," said Christie. "He is a wonderful example of how youth can get involved in the Relay for Life and help this fantastic cause."
Also, Tim Horton's/Wendy's has joined as a sponsor for the children's activities at this year's relay.
Children's activities at the Kids Corner will include scavenger hunts, soccer baseball, sun-hat decorating, parachute games, face painting, a fish pond, balloon animals, t-shirt art and themed laps.
"The Cumberland YMCA and the NSCC will be providing fun and games for the children throughout the day and evening," said Christie. "We thank the generosity of Tim Horton's/Wendy's for their support to expand our activities for Kids."
The event begins June 7, at 1 p.m. for registered teams, and the general public can join in on the fun at 3:30 p.m.
