AMHERST – Amherst has written off $7,696 in uncollectible accounts.

“Staff have identified a number of accounts as being uncollectible and wish to advise that all reasonable collection efforts have been exhausted,” Coun. Robert Bird said during council’s May meeting on Monday.

Bird said the uncollectible accounts include three water accounts, five property tax accounts relating to mobile homes that moved out of the jurisdiction, two veterinary bills for vicious dogs, one ice rental bill and three land consolidation issues.

One account was for the former Fundy Junior Phantoms and there were water and sewer bills for Lauryan Limited, Yum! Brands Canada and Prestige Homes, the company that supplied Cumberland Ridge with its mini-homes.

Mayor Robert Small asked of there is a way to track mobile homes, considering most of the accounts were relating this area.

“Is there anyway to track these? Is there anything we can do?” Small asked.

Finance director Vince Arbing said the town attempts to keep track of the mobile or mini-homes, but said it’s difficult with the serial number and the town doesn’t always have it.

“Sometimes these things literally move in the middle of the night and we’re not the only left owing,” Arbing said. “Sometimes there’s outstanding lot rent and other bills.”

Coun. George Baker said he has seen much higher accounts being written off in the past and he credited town staff for staying on top of outstanding accounts. He said writing off $7,600 is very reasonable considering it used to be several thousand dollars higher.
