AMHERST – The Shriners Exceptional Care Odyssey is coming to Amherst on Sunday to help raise awareness about the organization’s children’s hospital in Montreal.

The Shriner Fez Car, a Ford Explorer dressed like a Shriner Fez, tassel and all, will be in Amherst from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday and will participate in a parade and barbecue at the Cumberland Shrine Club at 20 Lawrence St.

“The car is traveling 17,000 km over 66 days to meet local patients who have been treated in the community and benefitted from the services offered at the current site and will benefit from expanded services at the new Canada Shriners Hospital that is currently under construction,” Bruce Cuco of the Cumberland Shrine Club said.

The hospital provides quality orthopedic care to children across Canada, the northeastern United States and around the world. Its bone specialists treat infants, children and teens for conditions like scoliosis, brittle bone disease, club feet and hip dysplasia.

Cuco said another goal of the odyssey is to recognized the work of local Shrine club members and their counterparts across the country who helped found the original hospital in Montreal in 1925.

The Shriners Hospital for Children also wants to thank Shrine club members for assisting with transportation and helping families whose children are patients.

The Fez car will be welcomed to Amherst by Mayor Robert Small at approximately 1 p.m. with a parade from 2 to 3 p.m. featuring the Cumberland Shrine Club and Shrine cars.

There will be a barbecue at the lodge from 3 to 5 p.m. before festivities move into the Masonic lodge.
