AMHERST – The full force of the law descended on the Amherst Centre Mall Thursday morning, bringing with it a bomb disposal unit from Halifax, helicopter, search and rescue and fire fighters.

The main entry of the building was cordoned off as Amherst Police, RCMP and ambulance lights flashed. Just before the entry, RCMP dispatched the remote control bomb disposal robot and children playfully chased after it.

Over 45 community policing partners participated in the annual National Police Week event here in Amherst, which each year has grown to include more and more of the providers and partners involved in policing.

“We have a variety of agencies and partners this year. We have the Red Cross, Buster the Safety bus, Natural Resources,” Const. Michelle Harrison with the Amherst Police said. “During National Police Week we celebrate those who have served and those who are serving. It draws the services and the community together.”

School students were particularly present during the morning, getting the opportunity to sit in a police helicopter, pickup stickers and handouts and learn more about the agencies, like the bomb robot many were quite found of.

“Believe it or not, we usually get a call out once a week,” RCMP Sgt. John Briggs with the explosive disposal unit based out of Halifax said. “Sometimes it’s a suspicious package, or old dynamite found in the garage when someone passes away.”

Other participating agencies included emergency response, coastal watch, motorcycle unit and mobile command, dog and handler from Corrections Services Canada, Department of Natural Resources, CN Police, the Amherst Police Department Bike Unit, Stellarton Police, Springhill Ground Search and Rescue, Springhill Police, the Special Olympics, Tantramar Radio, CANSA, and many more.

Great that this is happening in our town, a little disappointed that most of it is during the day and the school kids can't go and enjoy it too....
