Several thousand attend auxilary fundraiser

Fun, food and friendship were in the spotlight at the annual Highland Fling on Saturday.

AMHERST – Another edition of the Highland Fling is in the books and all indications are it was one of the most successful to date.

“It was a perfect day,” Fling convenor Vicki Daley said as events wrapped up at the Amherst Curling Club. “We had perfect weather, a big crowd and lots of fun. We couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

Several thousand people filed through the curling club over five hours raising money for the Cumberland Health Care Auxiliary to purchase a gamma probe that isolates lymph nodes for breast cancer patients.

The goal of this year’s Fling was $35,000 and while the figures won’t be in for a week or so, Daley is confident they will reach it.

A number of favourites were back again this year including the always popular book sale by the Amherst Lioness Club, the Lions Club’s plant sale and games of chance, as well as the Teddy Bears Health Clinic, the lobster rolls, Docs Dogs and others.

Some new attractions this year were the Town of Amherst’s Crapper Toss in which contestants had to throw a roll of toilet paper into an open toilet, while face-painting was also very popular.

Miranda March and Tyler Buchanan provided musical entertainment while Tantramar Radio and the Shrine Clowns were also on hand along with the Cumberland Joint Services Management Authority.

Other events held to support the Fling were the Sing for the Fling event at the Susan Taylor Theatre at ARHS and a Breakfast for the Fling at Breakfast at Brittney’s.

The Fling has raised more than $500,000 over 32 years with all the proceeds going to purchase medical equipment.
