Party to celebrate Willow Street park

The Amherst Rotary Club is hosting its Senior's Party at the Rotary Centennial Park on Willow Street on June 14.

Denise Corey and Morris Haugg of the Amherst Rotary Club look over plans for the club’s Senior’s Party at the Amherst Rotary Centennial Park on Willow Street on Saturday, June 14 from 1 to 5 p.m.

AMHERST – Don’t be surprised if you see Amherst Rotarians doing a sun dance in early June as they prepare to host the Rotary Senior’s Party on June 14.

Last year’s event was cancelled by the remnants of a tropical storm, but the club still succeeded in raising awareness toward the Rotary Park on Willow Street and improvements that have been made since the club purchased the former PMF Field as a centennial project several years ago.

“The purpose of the day is to create fun day for seniors, by way of recreation, games and entertainment,” fun day committee member Morris Haugg said. “We also want to promote the existence of the park and its various uses to the people in the Amherst area, expecially the senior population.”

While the event, that runs from 1 to 5 p.m., is open to anyone, fellow committee member and Rotarian Denise Corey said the party will showcase what the park has to offer – especially the seven pieces of exercise equipment located in the park.

There will be a tent with drinks and other refreshments, a variety of fruit, snacks and sweets. There will also be musical entertainment as well as yoga and gymnastics demonstrations throughout the afternoon.

“People who came can use the exercise equipment and the track and play games like washer toss and croquet and there’ll be a disc golf demonstration,” Corey said.

Haugg said there is no admission to attend and participants can earn tickets by participating in games, using the track and the equipment. Those tickets can be used to trade for water, pop, juice, fruit and other items in the canteen tent. Those items can also be purchased for a nominal fee.

Both the Town of Amherst and the Municipality of Cumberland have returned as sponsors of the event.

It is a nice park but we do not go there any more as it is more of a dog park than a seniors park. People regularly let their dogs run off lease and do not bother to pick up their dog's feces so you end up stepping in it if you are not careful. I would ban dogs from the park or if Amherst had an animal control officer I would have him/her stake out the park for a couple of weeks and fine/ban these inconsiderate owners.
