SOUTHAMPTON – Sunday is dedicated to the mother’s of the world, but Saturday is for trail enthusiasts and animal lovers everywhere.

The L.A. Animal Shelter is dealing out a winning hand this Saturday thanks to the Cobequid Off Highway Vehicle Club, who are supporting the shelter with a poker rally based in Southampton. During the rally, the shelter will set up a table featuring its services and pets available for adoption, including Marley who, right now, is the shelter’s pet of the week.

The Cobequid Off Highway Vehicle Club [COHVC] is partnering with the Lillian Allbon Animal Shelter in Upper Nappan to offer one of the season’s first all terrain vehicle poker rallies. Each year COHVC pools its resources with a worthy cause to operate the May poker rally and this year the club comes right when the shelter needs it, shelter president Marilyn Williams said.

“I want this to be used for improvements for our building,” Williams said. “We need a new ceiling, floors, more cages for cats, which are very, very expensive. It’s a first for a lot of things to the point where we can’t wait anymore.”

The shelter has made a number of improvements to its shelter and office, but the time has come to update the building itself if the shelter going to protect those investments, Williams said. And they certainly haven’t forgotten about the pets they work diligently to find homes for.

“We really want to get a tub area for bathing the dogs,” she said.

To entice off road enthusiast to help them with their goals, the shelter is awarding three prizes for best hand at the Saturday, May 10th rally. On top of that, they’ve amassed enough prizes so far for 75-draws on top of the best hands.

“We’ve had wonderful participation from local businesses and companies,” Williams said.

Among them, Pet Value has come on as one of the event’s major sponsors.

The poker rally takes place Saturday, at the Rod Brown Mill in Southampton. There’s ample parking for everyone and a barbecue will be offered by the shelter on site. Registration is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and costs $15 per ATV, $10 for a second hand. Helmets are mandatory.

Meet Ms. Marley

Maybe the biggest awards available this weekend at the poker rally for the L.A. Animal Shelter isn’t for the shelter, but one of its residents.

Marley, a four-year old Basset/Rottie-mix, is presently the shelter’s longest-staying resident awaiting a permanent home.

Spayed and friendly, shelter president says Molly would do well in a home with no other pets so she could be “queen of the castle” and both she and staff at the L.A. Animal Shelter would love for Molly to find a home for Mother’s Day.
