Athletes, coaches going to national games in Vancouver

AMHERST – The cakes were flying out of here on Saturday afternoon, all for the cause of sending 10 local athletes and two coaches to the national Special Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. this summer.

The local Special Olympics team hosted a cake auction at the Bridge Workshop on May 3, raising about $6,000, thanks to a dollar-for-dollar matching commitment from Scotiabank.

“We did really well,” said Lisa Hines, head coach of the local Special Olympics soccer team. “There were a couple big bids in the end that really helped.”

Those bids included a $250 purchase of a cake by the Pink Ladies Maid Service, which then donated the cake back for re-auction, which brought in about another $150 for the cause. Following that, another cake was purchased for $500 by Bill Munroe and Archway Insurance.

The majority of the cakes were donated from the local community, with others coming from as far away as Halifax, Truro and Fredericton. Veteran auctioneer Roger Bacon and Steve LeBlanc led the auction, as a large crowd of supporters was on hand to make bids.

“It was quite a community effort,” said Hines.

The funds raised will go a long way to sending the local team to Vancouver, with departure scheduled for July 6.

“It costs approximately $1,000 for each person to go, so it’s a big burden for us on top of our regular operating expenses,” she explained. “This fundraiser was quite substantial, and it was certainly very welcome.”

While it was the last official fundraiser for the cause put on by the Special Olympics team, there are other events such as bottle drives and ticket raffles being organized by parents that will also support the cause.

Meanwhile, local athletes are preparing for the provincial Special Olympics games, which will take place in Antigonish on June 20-22.
