Supports YMCA and other community organizations

The Amherst Y Service Club celebrated its 52nd birthday on Wednesday.

AMHERST – Like other service organizations, the Y’s Men find themselves fighting an ongoing battle to recruit new members and it comes down to marketing and publicity.

Speaking before the Amherst Y Service Club’s 52nd Annual Charter Night, regional director (Maritimes) Reg Springer said the Y movement is working hard at encouraging younger members to join clubs across the region.

“What it comes down to is people seeing you out in the community and the work you’re doing,” Springer said. “That attracts them to your club.”

Springer said service club members themselves are the best recruiters and he feels it’s up to them to help spread the work of what Y’s Men International does in their community and around the world.

“We are in a society of non-volunteerism and people don’t understand what volunteering is,” Springer said. “That’s the challenge we and others face. It’s something we have to work to overcome.”

While the Y Service Club is well known for its support of the YMCA, president Charlie Seymour said the organization provides funding and sponsorship for numerous causes and charities in the county.

The club has been a longtime sponsor of little league baseball in Amherst and recently took on the Cross Border Challenge races as a club project.

To help raise funds, the club has its Christmas tree lot every December and also has citrus sales two times a year as well as curtain rentals.

Internationally, he said, a lot of focus has been on fighting malaria through the purchase of mosquito netting that has been sent to communities in Africa and other Third World countries.

The Amherst club has 34 members and there are 327 members in the Maritime region.

Seymour said the Amherst club is always looking for more members. Anyone interested in a Y Service Club membership can call Seymour at 667-4670 or check out the club’s website at www.cumberlandyserviceclub.com.
