JOGGINS - The management and staff of the Joggins Fossil Institute are busy preparing for their sixth year of operation. 

The Joggins Fossil Cliffs UNESCO World Heritage Site and Joggins Fossil Centre will officially open for the season on Earth Day, Tuesday. 

Hours of operation for Tuesday and the remainder of April and May will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On opening day, the Centre will have complimentary tea/coffee and cookies in addition to a new gallery exhibit.  The exhibit features Dr. Laing Ferguson who was a Professor of Geology at Mount Allison University, former Board of Directors member of the Joggins Fossil Institute, and an instrumental part of the UNESCO designation process.  Dr. Ferguson passed away in December 2013.

Other events and activities in the works for 2014 include:  the annual Adopt-A-Highway Clean-Up of Maccan Woods (May 2014), activities to recognize the 6th Anniversary of inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list (July, 2014), weekly Summer Kid’s Camps (July & August) and the annual Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up at Lower Cove Beach in September.  The Joggins Fossil Institute is also excited to host the prom night for River Hebert High School students in June!

The 2013 operating year was a busy one for the Joggins Fossil Institute.  The Centre hosted approximately 40 educational groups totally just over 1100 students/visitors.  In addition, almost 19,000 visitors from around the world visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site

The centre is also excited to be included in the first round of a multi-year Canada Post stamp series of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Canada!  The postage stamps are available now at Canada Post locations.
