AMHERST – Amherst has a new fire chief and safety compliance officer.

Greg Jones, a 14-year veteran of the Amherst Fire Department, will take over as chief and safety compliance offer on April 14.

He replaces retiring chief Bill Crossman.

“It’s a great feeling, I’ve worked hard over the last 14 years to get to the point where I am at and I’m looking forward to leading the Amherst Fire Department into the future,” Jones said. “We have a very good fire department with a dedicated and experienced membership and I look forward to working with these people as we move into the future.”

Jones also has significant experience in the field of occupational health and safety management and has demonstrated strong leadership within the fire department, having served as a lieutenant since 2009.

“I had a series of conversations with people I knew and it was suggested that I run for it,” Jones said. “Society is continuing to change and what is asked of the fire department will change as we move forward. I want to plan for where we’re going to be in the next five, 10 and 15 years.”

He is also very active in the community, coaching with the Cumberland Minor Football Association.

“I’m very pleased that we have been able to recruit someone of Greg’s caliber to our organization. He has a great vision for the department and for the workplace safety culture of the town,” Amherst CAO Greg Herrett said in making the appointment.

Jones was selected from a number of well qualified candidates.
