AMHERST - If you are an aspiring lifesaver, lifeguard, or just want a way to fine-tune your swimming skills, the Cumberland YMCA is offering a National Lifeguard Service course.
The course, that includes standard first aid, begins on April 6 and will finish with an exam on June 8.
There are currently members registered and the YMCA encourages those with an interest to either call the facility at 667-9112 or stop in to register before the course begins.
The course includes a combination of classroom time as well as time in the pool. The cost is $180, and attendance is mandatory. Upon successful completion participants will be certified as a lifeguard under the Lifesaving Society of Nova Scotia.
To qualify for the course applicants must be at least 16 years old on exam day, and have Bronze Cross certification. Lifeguards who already have their certification but need to recertify are encouraged to sign up as well, and will participate in a condensed recertification course.
Stacey Coombs is the lifeguard supervisor at the YMCA and she would like to remind everyone that if they miss their chance, or are not yet qualified to not be discouraged. There will be other opportunities to get involved and become a lifesaver.
“We are proud to be able to offer the course. We also offer Bronze Cross and Bronze Medallion courses as much as possible,” she said.
Health fitness and aquatic manager, Laura Coleman said, “We try to do the NLS annually, if not twice a year.”
The Amherst YMCA has 19 lifeguards on staff all of which are part time, and some are seasonal. The job is primarily students, but there are adults as well. The advantages of having so many part time staff is that it opens the door to schedule flexibility said Coleman.
