Muriel Wightman, a former district commissioner with the Girl Guides and an active member of the UCW, has passed away.
Muriel Wightman was member of Canadian Women's Army Corps during Second World War. She was also active with the Girl Guides and the UCW at Trinity-St. Stephen's United Church. She passed away on Thursday. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday at Campbell's Funeral Home with the funeral Wednesday at 2 p.m.
AMHERST – A former district commissioner with Girl Guides and a member of the Canadian Women's Army Corp in Canada has died.
Muriel Eileen (Irwin) Wightman died Thursday at Highcrest Nursing Home in Springhill.
She was 89.
A native of Chippawa, Ont., she joined the army corp at age 18, serving in Canada, England and Northwest Eurpe during the Second World War.
She met her husband, Ralph, overseas and married in Amsterdam in November 1945.
They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in November 2010.
She was active with Girl Guides and the UCW at Trinity-St. Stephen's United Church.
She is predeceased by her husband, Major Ralph, and son, Sgt. Ralph Wightman.
Visiting hours are at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, with Branch 10 of the Royal Canadian Legion doing a tribute service on April 1 at 7 p.m.
Funeral services are set for Wednesday, April 2, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Carolyn and Victor MacLeod officiating.
Burial will be in the Amherst Cemetery at a later date.
