KENTVILLE - A Murphy Lake man pleaded guilty in Kentville provincial court March 25 to charges connected to a June 2013 shooting.

Tony Allan Nickerson, 46, was charged with attempting to murder George Woodworth while using a prohibited firearm, a sawed-off shotgun; possessing a loaded, prohibited firearm without holding a licence or authorization; possessing a prohibited device, a sawed-of shotgun, for a purpose dangerous to the public peace; committing an aggravated assault by endangering the life of Woodworth, using a firearm - a 12-gauge shotgun - while committing the indictable offence of aggravated assault and possessing firearms, a 22-calibre, a 35-calibre and a 12-gauge shotgun, without holding a licence.

Nickerson pleaded not guilty to the charges on Oct. 7 and the matters were adjourned to March 25 and 26 for trial. During his March 25 court appearance, Nickerson changed his pleas to guilty to four of the six charges. Nickerson maintained not guilty pleas to the charges of attempted murder and possessing firearms, a 22-calibre, a 35-calibre and a 12-gauge shotgun, without holding a licence.

Judge Claudine MacDonald adjourned the matters to May 28 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing. The remaining charges have been adjourned to May 28 for disposition.

Following a show cause hearing on June 19, Judge Alan Tufts granted Nickerson’s release on a recognizance including a $50,000 bond justified on the property of Nickerson’s surety, Conrad Nickerson, father of the accused. Release conditions include that the accused must remain under house arrest at his father’s home in Clarke’s Harbour.

A 52-year-old Kentville man was rushed to hospital with non-life threatening injuries following a June 14, 2013,  shooting at a Park Street home. Nickerson was arrested about an hour after the shooting, which took place just after 12:30 a.m.
