Maple syrup season in full-swing throughout Cumberland County

NAPPAN-Pancake days such as the one held this past Saturday at the Nappan United Church are signs that maple syrup season-and perhaps spring-is upon us.

“We had a bit of a lull between 3:00 and 4:00, but from 11:00 until 3:00, it was really busy,” said Boyd Morris, who along with Philip Brown, was on sausage duty on Saturday. “We went through twelve 20 pound boxes of sausage,” said Brown.

As for where the Nappan United Church ascertained such maple products as maple syrup and maple butter from, a Mr. Crowe from Lynn Mountain was their source.

In the church hall’s kitchen, such volunteers as Linda Boss, Marilyn Kohout, Angel MacKay, Jeannette Morris and Bona Ripley cooked up blueberry pancakes.

“It’s been a very successful day,” said Kohout of the 220 people who attended.

In addition to the aforementioned, such young volunteers as Erin and Paige Weatherbee of Halifax helped out by delivering orders to peoples’ tables.

“All of the hot cross buns, cinnamon buns, biscuits, brownies, squares and cupcake were homemade by people who attend this church,” stated Paige Weatherbee.

Elsewhere on Saturday, March 15, there was a pancake supper at St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church in Springhill. On Sunday, March 16, from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm, Sunrise Senior’s Hall in Lower Shinimicas is hosting a pancake supper.

On, March 22, the Malagash community hall will be hosting a pancake and maple syrup brunch featuring homemade pancakes, maple syrup, baked beans, brown bread, sausage, dessert, tea, coffee and juice to benefit its United Church. Also on March 22, in Malagash, Jost Vineyards will be hosting its annual maple festival. Guests can relax by the fire in their newly renovated Winery Boutique, enjoy a maple sausage BBQ, listen to music by Laughing Freemen (12-5 pm), and take home some free grape vine clippings. There will also be vine pruning demos at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm, Swan’s Maple Products, maple treats/candy.
