GLACE BAY — The 17-year-old girl who fell over a 60-foot cliff Friday night is recovering at the Halifax Infirmary.

Madonna MacIntyre of Enfield said her niece Jessica Walsh is in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit.

“Her family hasn't left her side for a minute," she said. "Jessica doesn't remember the accident and we're thankful for that."

MacIntyre said her niece has a hairline fracture on her upper right arm below her shoulder, a broken femur, a broken pelvis and fluid on her lungs. She was in surgery for five hours on Saturday.

"Her lungs are bruised significantly to the point where she is on a respirator.”

Walsh was walking along the cliff after she left a teen dance at nearby Ring 73 with a 16-year-old boy, when she fell over the icy embankment at the end of Sixth Street to the rocky shore, more than 60 feet below.

MacIntyre said the family is grateful to those who took part in rescuing Jessica.

"She wouldn't be alive or would be in worse condition than she is, if it wasn't for Jim Taylor (chief of the Glace Bay Volunteer Fire Department) and his crew going down and rescuing her."

According to her aunt, Walsh is to graduate from Glace Bay High School this year.

“I don’t know if she's going to make that. She's got a long road of recovery ahead of her."

More to come.
