Concert of celebration held at Oxford Capitol Theatre

OXFORD-Women and men of all ages filled the standing room only Capitol Theatre on International Women’s Day during the Inspiring Change: A Concert of Celebration. All proceeds benefitted the Girl Power self-esteem program offered this summer in Oxford by the Sexual Health Centre for Cumberland County.

Founded by the by Sexual Health Centre for Cumberland County (SHCCC) in 1997, the award-winning Go Girl self-esteem workouts for girls between the ages eight and 13 is based on the four conditions for high self-esteem: feeling connected, becoming aware of individuality, confidence and valuable role models.

“It has been SHCCC’s goal to raise necessary funds to provide Go Girl workshops each summer, throughout Cumberland County,” stated SHCCC coordinator Ruthie Patriquin on Saturday. “To date, we have been successful in reaching that goal and hundreds of girls have benefitted from this unique and supportive program.”

In addition to musical performances by the Cobequid Fun Tones, Jean Mitchell and Charlotte Fresia, in conversation with Sara Mattinson and Alia Mohamad, notwithstanding Jane Smith’s Minerva stories of inspired change, such expressive dances as the Cuban Tambourine Dance and Stick Ministry highlighted the day.

“After March break, we’re going to try to get more of the (high school) seniors involved in the OREC International Women’s Day picture project,” stated school project leader Hailie Tattrie. “International Women’s Day doesn’t just start and end on March 8. Some of the best pictures were the candid ones where the girls weren’t quite ready, but their pictures turned out pretty good just the same.”

Prior to refreshments, women in attendance rose from their seats to sing One Woman: A Song for All to Sing, to conclude the Inspiring Change concert.
