‘People are getting to the point where they want heat and the beach’

TRURO – Local travel agencies are extremely busy, saying harsh winter weather is one of the main reasons people are escaping the area for a break.

“The weather has been so horrific … people are getting to the point where they want heat and the beach,” said Mary

Shannon, senior travel consultant at Maritime Travel in the

Truro Mall.

Shannon said many of the business’s clients are booking trips to Cuba, Dominican and “in the last few days more North American” plans are being made. In addition, Florida continues to be a hot spot.

She said more people, from university students to families with young children and teenagers, appear to be travelling and a lot of trip packages for the month of April are already sold out.

Becky Brenton, a travel consultant with Carlson Wagonlit Harvey’s Travel in Truro, agreed it’s been extremely busy.

“It’s busier this year,” compared to the same timeframe last year, Brenton said.

“It’s partially due to the weather but also people waited for deals last year and then they were sold out. They aren’t waiting this year. We are hearing clients say they want value for their hard-earned money … and trips are often important for families” to spend time together.

Brenton said the south continues to draw large numbers of people from this area until April. Overall, travellers are heading mostly to the Dominican, Mexico, Cuba and  Jamaica, most using direct flights.

“The more travelled people are going to change planes and branch out from direct lines … and go to places like Grenada and Barbados,” Brenton said.

She added there appears to be “more different” reasons for travelling lately, including people wanting to “travel for their bucket lists” or trying wine and cooking theme trips, going to new places to volunteer in communities, and wanting to experience new cultures.
