An International Women's Day community open house returns to Baddeck on Saturday. Shown are last year's discussion panel, from the left, Jan Vickers (moderator), Jennifer Anderson (Sampson MacDougal), Melanie Garland (Baddeck Employment and Resource Centre), and Holly MacInnis (Tim Hortons Baddeck).
The third annual edition of the celebration in the Village of Baddeck follows a successful 2013 event that saw successful women in business lead a day of discussion.
"Last year the event was really inspiring and motivating day so right away I started planning for this year and knew I wanted to do something else," said Anna MacDonald, who takes on the role of organizer for the second consecutive year. "It's been a process since then."
Although the day doesn't necessarily have one theme, she said panel discussion this year feature three women — Stephanie Beaton, Jackie Hendriksen, Erin MacKenzie — who work in the health-care profession.
That discussion will be followed by an afternoon presentation from physiotherapist Lindsay Bradley about posture and body mechanics and then an introductory yoga class.
In addition to the panel discussion and presentations, community displays will be available for viewing throughout the day featuring information about general topics of concern to women, including but not necessarily focused on health.
"It's a little bit of a different focus, but ultimately it's the same idea to encourage women to gather, celebrate and inspire and all those good things."
Refreshments will be available throughout the day and people are encouraged to stop in for as long as they wish.
"It is a totally open house kind of thing. You can spend the whole day with us or an hour or whatever you are comfortable with and we are happy to see as many people as possible."
