SYDNEY â€” Local events are planned to mark International Women's Day early today.

While the day is normally marked on March 8, local groups are holding some activities to mark the occasion today.
The Ann Terry Society and the Shannon School of Business speakersâ€™ series invite the public to an evening of poetry, music, and conversation on the subject of women and change. Beginning at 7 p.m., Shauntay Grant and musical guest Carmel Mikol will take the stage to entertain. The event will be held at The Loft, located in the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design, 322 Charlotte Street. Grant is a Halifax-based speaker, writer, author, and spoken word artist, while Carmel Mikol is a Cape Breton-based singer-songwriter. The is an all ages event with a reception to follow.
The Cape Breton Small Business Development Centre will have Cape Breton University professsor Jacqueline Scott act as speaker on its leadership development program at a women in business dinner. It will take place beginning with a welcome receoption at 5:15 p.m. at Flavor 19. Dinner will follow at 6 p.m.
It has been 104 years since March 8 was designated as a day to recognize the struggles of women around the globe.
