UPPER NAPPAN – For her tenth birthday, Danaka Hussey didn’t get anything she could use but she got everything she wanted.

Ten year-old Danaka Hussey made her birthday a memorable one for kennel manager Robynn Hatton and everyone – including the four-legged friends – at the L.A. Animal Shelter on Monday. Hussey asked for pet supplies for her birthday.

Turning a decade-old is a milestone for a lot of children and their parents, and when Rosalind and Glen Hussey asked their little girl what she wanted for her birthday they were surprised by her answer: dog food.

Well, not just dog food. She wanted cat food, too, and litter. Maybe a ball to play with, and some blankets.

“I just wanted to help all the animals out there in need,” Danaka said Monday as her family brought her birthday gifts into the Lillian Allbon Animal Shelter outside Amherst.

“She’s an animal lover,” Rosalind said. “We’re proud of her.”

With the exception of a camera, which she brought to the shelter to take pictures of the pets awaiting adoption, Danaka’s friends and family supported her birthday wish. What birthday money she received, she used to buy more food and pet toys to entertain the cats and dogs at the shelter.

“I love dogs and cats,” Danaka said. “And hamsters.”

The Lillian Allbon Animal Shelter is an independent shelter which cares for and re-homes stray or neglected dogs and cats in Cumberland County. Located at 798 Smith Road just outside Amherst, the shelter is run mainly by volunteers. It can house 12 dogs and 30 cats at a time.

Online, the L.A. Animal Shelter can be found at laanimalshelter.ca.
