Truro residents shave their heads in support of friend battling cancer

TRURO – With clump after large clump of her hair falling steadily to the floor, Dorothy Henderson, expressed a request and one slight concern.

“Any lice, take them too,” the 89-year-old resident of the Mira Long Term Care Centre chuckled, to the staffer who was shaving her head, before quickly adding: “Leave my ears, Barb.”

Before long, Henderson’s curly locks were all lying on the floor behind her as the large, open room buzzed with light-hearted banter and laughter.

“For Sandra, because I love her,” she said, of giving up her hair.

When all was said and done, Henderson and four of the home’s staff members had been shaved bald, as a way of raising funds and generating support for Sandra Walsh, a Mira employee who is battling cancer.

Walsh’s husband Dan also joined in the fun, agreeing to not only lose his hair, but his beard as well. There was, however, nothing light-hearted about the sincerity of his sentiment toward her co-workers.

“They’re supporting my wife in a time when she probably needs it more than anybody. She calls the Mira her second family and that’s the way she’s treated,” he said. “She going through a rough time, but with the help of her friends and her co-workers, she’ll get through it.”

As another one of the so-called “bald girls” Mary Tyler said getting her locks shorn was actually covering off a couple of goals.

“To support Sandra,” she said, of the number-one reason. “She’s a great gal and she needs all the support she can get right now.”

But Tyler joked that the event, for her, also served another purpose.

“I’ve always wanted to shave my head so this is a perfect opportunity and it’s one off my

bucket list,” she laughed.

In all, the effort generated $1,487.50 towards the cause.

This has always been the spirit at The Mira. Everyone is always there to land support when the getting gets tough. I will always cherished having been part of the close knit family.
