AMHERST – A former politician and recipient of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award has died.

Marsh Fox, 80, died Monday in Halifax following a lengthy illness.

Fox, a longtime insurance executive with the Douglas Rogers Insurance Company, was a member of Amherst town council from 1991 to 1994 and ran unsuccessfully for the Liberals in the 2003 provincial election against Conservative Ernest Fage.

While on town council he served as deputy mayor and was chairman and secretary of the Amherst Water Commission.

He was also a member of the SOAR Community Health Board and chaired the United Way of Cumberland while also serving as a member of the Amherst Rotary Club and the Amherst Golf Club.

Fox played a prominent role in the Above and Beyond Campaign that raised more than $7.5 million in the community for the new regional hospital and worked with Dwight Jones in creating the Highland Classic Charity Golf Tournament in support of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation and was honoured by the foundation with its highest honour in 2004.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Campbell’s Funeral Home. A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Fox’s memory can be made to Christ Church, L.A. Animal Shelter or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
