Al Bernard presents free magic show during Springhill’s annual winter carnival

SPRINGHILL-Al Bernard knew from a young age he wanted to be a magician.

“I was born and raised in Moncton,” said Bernard. “I told my buddy sitting next to me when a magician came to our school once that ‘I would do that someday.’”

For two decades, Bernard, who currently lives in Kentville, has been a full-time magician, performing at trade shows, schools, exhibitions, malls and conventions.

“I’ve done magic shows for 10,000 audiences just like yours,” said Bernard. “I’ve been doing this full-time for the past 20 years.”

For nearly an hour, Bernard captivated the standing room only crowd that filled the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre’s CIBC common room as part of Springhill’s annual Chilli Willi Winter Carnival, an event that got underway on February 14 with a Chilli Willi free skate, a Blues’ home game against the Strait Pirates and the Lion’s Park revitalization Valentine’s Day dinner and variety show.

Another free skate was also offered on Saturday at the Richard Calder Arena.

On Monday, Springhill’s two elementary schools, West End and Junction Road, will get into the Chilli Winter spirit with Colour and Pajamas days respectively.

On Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 am-11:30 am, there will be free Mom and Tots skates at the arena. Free adult skate follow from 11:30 am-1:30 pm both days.

On Wednesday, Springhill elementary schools’ sport shirts day, there will be a free Chilli Willi skate from 3:30 pm until 4:30 pm. Girl Guides skating will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. The skate will be followed by hot chocolate. All welcome.

On Friday, another Chilli Willi free skate will take place between 3:30 and 4:30 pm. Also on Friday, the annual Chilli Willi snow sculpture competition closes at 4:30 pm. Contest winners will be announced on Monday, February 24 at 3:00 pm.

The competition is sponsored by Ross Anderson Pharmacy and Leisure Services.

On Saturday, February 22, there will be breakfast at the fire hall from at 8:00 am until noon for $6.00. From 10:00 am until 2:00 pm, a Blues turkey burger sale will be taking place inside the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre.

Take the roof off family fun day (Saturday, February 22) continues with a free snowshoeing clinic at 1:00 pm. Meet in the lobby of the Dr. Carson Community Centre.  Snowshoes will be provided. Free hot chocolate following nature walk.

Finally, on Sunday, February 23, Chilli Willi wraps up with a family coasting party at pit pond from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. Refreshments to follow in the Teen Centre.
