AMHERST – A new program aimed at getting family members more involved in supporting those who are dealing with mental health issues is coming to Cumberland County.

Families Matter in Mental Health will be offered beginning in mid-February as a new program of Cumberland Mental Health Services.

Pam Chenhall, psychologist with mental health services, says this 11-week program will provide loved ones with the knowledge and communication skills needed in their role as a supporter.

“Families and friends are an important part of the circle of support and through this program we will offer strategies and problem-solving skills that will allow them to be more confident in their day-to-day interactions with their loved one,” said Chenhall.

An important aspect of the program is a focus on the caregiver themselves.

“When someone we love is suffering in anyway, we often forget to look after ourselves. We want to emphasize the need to care for yourself so you can offer the right kind of supports and also have the ability to deal with a crisis situation or recognize a potential relapse,” added Chenhall.

Anyone who thinks they could benefit from this confidential program is welcome and it isn’t necessary for participants to have a family member that is a client of mental health. No referrals are required and the program is free of charge.

For further information, any interested should contact Christiana MacDougall-Fleming at Cumberland Mental Health Services.

The phone number is 667-3879 and regular office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
