Driver is 87-years-old

AMHERST – An 83-year-old woman pedestrian was hit by a motor vehicle at about 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday.

“The woman who was struck is 83-years-old and she was taken to hospital immediately after with non-life-threatening injuries,” said Const. John Haggerty of the Amherst Police Department. “Also involved was the lone occupant of the vehicle, an 87-year-old female. She was the driver of the vehicle involved.”

Haggerty visited the pedestrian at the hospital.

“It appears at this time she’s OK,” added Haggerty. “She’s being treated, otherwise I would say, at this point, they expect her to recover.”

Amherst police were at the scene of the collision most of the afternoon, which took place near, or on, a crosswalk on Victoria Street East, between Eddy Street and Acadia Street.

The incident is under investigation and no charges have been laid yet.

“Part of out investigation will be where the vehicle and the pedestrian were at the time of the collision,” said Haggerty. “All I can say is she was on the roadway, either on or in very close proximity to the crosswalk.”

The investigation includes interviewing more people and analyzing the measurements they took at the scene.

“We’re going to weigh everything here to see what the cause was but it doesn’t appear speed was a major factor, but we’re going to do a thorough investigation before we make our determination,” said Haggerty.

Haggerty reminds drivers to be alert to pedestrians.

“Downtown Amherst is generally busy through the week every day,” he said.

“Pedestrians are our most vulnerable road users and sometimes it’s easy to forget that,” he added. “So a word reminder to drivers to give them (pedestrians) the right-of-way and the benefit of the doubt when driving.”

As a pedestrian it is a tricky job to cross any street but as a pedestrian we must remember to wait until we see vehicles stop. Drivers can get distracted and may not see us fast enough. I do not know what happened here but we seem to have a few pedestrians being hit in crosswalks in Amherst. I pray a full recovery for the injured and peace of mind for the driver.
