AMHERST – From humble beginnings nearly 20 years ago, the Autumn House Evening of Art has become a celebration of the arts and a great fundraiser for Cumberland County’s lone women’s shelter.

“We have about 60 artists and artisans who have donated items to the evening,” organizing committee member Louise VanThielen said Tuesday as she helped set up a window display on the corner of Church and Victoria Street. “Their level of support is tremendous and greatly appreciated. We have some donors who have been contributing their creations to us since the beginning of this fundraiser.”

The Evening of Art fundraiser is set for Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Wandlyn Inn’s Cumberland Room.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the auction starting at 7:30 p.m.

A $25 ticket includes admission to the event, hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, two beverage tickets and a chance to win a piece of art.

Besides paintings, the auction will also include items of pottery, sculptures and fibre arts like rugs, quilts and silk items.

Longtime Autumn House support worker Ruth Currie said proceeds from the evening go a long way toward supporting the important work that goes on through the women’s shelter.

While funding from the provincial Community Services Department supports core services such as crisis shelter and counseling, it does not support programs and services like the important outreach program that allows support workers to reach out to clients across Cumberland County.

“There are a number of outreach services we wouldn’t be able to provide without the support of fundraisers such as this,” Currie said. “The core funding we receive from the province only goes so far. What we raise helps us support these additional programs that we feel are vital and our clients depend on.”

Tickets are available by calling 667-1344. Tickets will also be sold at the door.
