Recreation program gets kids of all ages outside

PARRSBORO – Staying inside and being warm may be nice for some of us, but there is something to be said for bundling up in a snowsuit and heading outside to play, especially when you’re young.
That seems to be the message for Parrsboro’s Winter Explorers program, which kicked off during the past week for groups in the preschool and five-and-up age categories.

“Essentially, it’s an outdoor-based program to get kids active and enjoy the winter weather, instead of sitting inside, thinking it’s too cold or they don’t know what to do in the snow,” said recreation director Tissy Bolivar. “Primarily, it’s about getting outside, being active and having fun.”

The five-and-over age category runs after school until 4 p.m. every Tuesday, with Bolivar meeting the kids at the school and bringing them back afterwards. This group held its first day of activity last week.

The preschool group held its first day on Monday of this week, enjoying an afternoon of sledding behind town hall. It also takes place from 2:45 to 4 p.m.

Both groups will run for five weeks.

Activities are open for discussion, according to Bolivar.

“They get to plan a lot of what they want to do,” she said. “I ask them what they like to play, and they like things like hide and seek, treasure hunts, sledding and coasting, building snow sculptures. A lot of them are games you can play all year-round, but it’s just a matter of letting them know they’re not just summer activities.”

She had planned to take the older group sledding by the Don Yorke ball field this week, but predicted warm temperatures and rain were posing a threat to that idea.

Whatever the kids decide to do, the laughter from the Monday group indicates that one thing will be certain – fun.
