'A fight that went terribly wrong'
RCMP are investigating a sudden death near Kensington, P.E.I.
KENSINGTON, P.E.I - A 53-year-old Kensington area man is dead following what the RCMP say was a "fight that went terribly wrong" Christmas Day in the Prince County community.East Prince RCMP was called to the scene along Route 2 near the Pine Acres RV store in Kensington around 9:30 p.m. Christmas Day night.
Andrew Blackadar, a communications officer with the RCMP, said late Wednesday police were still looking for a suspect. He did say police have identified that suspect and know who they are looking for.
"We are hoping to make an arrest soon, " Blackadar said.
RCMP officers were combing through the crime scene along Route 2 Wednesday evening looking for clues as to what may have unfolded. Traffic restrictions were put in place but the highway was not closed.
Police believe the altercation began at a nearby house. It then spilled out on to the nearby highway, on a dark, cold, snowy Christmas Day night.
Blackadar said police believe the two men were fighting in the middle of the highway when the driver of one car stopped to try to break up the fight. Then a second vehicle came along and hit the two men who were fighting. That resulted in one man being pronounced dead at the scene. The second man involved in the fight then fled.
The extent of his injuries are not known and it is the second man police are on the hunt for.
Blackadar said police have interviewed the driver of the vehicle that hit the two men. He said police don't believe they were involved in the altercation.
Blackadar said the reason behind the altercation remains unknown. The RCMP said more information would be released on Thursday.
Prince District RCMP is currently being assisted at the scene by the Police Dog Service, Forensic Identification Section, a Traffic Reconstructionist, L Division Major Crime Section and Kensington Police.
Traffic on Route 2 between MacIntyre Road and Garden Road will be restricted and may be shut down. Motorists are urged to use an alternate route.
The name of the deceased is not being released pending notification of next of kin.
