50 cents will get you a small bracelet, and $1 will get you a big one, with all money raised going to cancer research. Melanson can whip up a small bracelet in two minutes.

AMHERST – The original goal was $100, but that goal was quickly boosted to $1,000.

“The last total was $373,” said Jacob Melanson Monday afternoon at his home in Amherst .

The 10-year-old sells bracelets made from small elastic bands and sold his first Nov. 18.

He sells them for 50 cents and $1, depending on the size of the bracelet.

“His goal was to raise $100 but within two days he raised $200, so he put it up to $500,” said Jennifer Hayden, Melanson’s mom. “He’s getting close to $500, and now his goal is $1,000.

The money he raises is for cancer research.

Melanson’s step-dad, Gary Estabrooks, was diagnosed with cancer just before Christmas of 2012, which he beat back with cancer treatments.

“Having cancer in our house last year put cancer at the forefront,” said Hayden. “He’s a lot better. All is good and we’re moving forward.”

Melanson learned to make the bracelets with friends at school and from his babysitters.

Using 20 different coloured elastics he can make a 50-cent bracelet in about two minutes.

He uses a loom to make the bigger $1-sized bracelets.

Three of his friends, Madden Miller, Elliot Miller and Kennedy Hyatt, have helped to make many of the bracelets, and so has his hockey team, the Truro Atom AAA Bearcats.

“Quite a few of his teammates were helping him,” said Hayden. “They went on a road trip and the boys were helping him make them in the hotel.

“The kids and parents knew what he was selling them for, so the kids started making them and selling them at school” she added. “And then they’d bring the money to practice and give him the money.”

He recently filled an order for 60 bracelets in Oxford.

“A friend bought 30 for her daughter’s class and 30 for her son’s class,” said Hayden.

Also, he recently set up shop during an open house at his mom’s business, Jennifer Hayden Esthetics, where he raised $30.
